Saturday:

The team arrives early Saturday and unloads in the garage. The temperature is hot, completely the opposite to the last event here. It is clear that the last event's setup data will be meaningless this weekend.
Scanning the garage, we wonder who will show up this weekend. One significant no-show is perennial NYSRRC favorite Dave Zaslow...where is he?

On the grid, there is still no sign of Dave, but there are plenty of other cars to contend with, including a few fast SSB cars that normally run nationals. Bildon strategy is simple "stay out of their way". The track is fast, with no rain in sight for the entire weekend. Don's #50 car runs well, and easily posts fastest time overall of the session. Meanwhile, Bill's car has developed a misfire since the last event. The car seems to be "loading up" under full throttle to the extent that it's unable to maintain revs. This is perplexing as nothing under the hood was changed after it was put on the trailer at Nelson. But that's what race cars do....they break!

Back in the garage, the cars are being prepped for the afternoon's 8 lap race which will double as qualifying for the Sunday "main". After weighing the car to check scale calibration, Don looks up from cleaning the windshield and………there he is...Dave Zaslow towing his Rabbit has arrived late! Finally, the weekend's competition just got better. Dave informs us that he had "work issues". He will try to get clearance to run this afternoon's race. After a quick chat with the chief steward, he does and will start from the back of the pack. Bill (deep under the hood) is amused to find team-mate Don applying stickers and touching up paint on the #50 Golf. You know when the car is running well, that's all there is to do!

The team holds a strategy session at lunch, where the main focus is discussing Don's start strategy. Bill has a few choice suggestions on leading the pack from pole position, stemming from his past experience.
Don chooses the inside lane and lines up next to the brand new SSA Honda VTEC Civic of Joel Liperini. Before the race, Don talks to Dave about the fact that the cars are in 2 different classes, and the cars should not touch!

The race starts with the Honda getting a good run and he passes Don, no problem. Don's car is fast and pulls out a lead on the next place ITB car. Meanwhile, Zaslow is making his way up through the field and will take 3rd. Bill's changes have not helped the #55 car and it is still running too rich. He will finish a distant 7th. Post race, the cars are weighed...some expressed concern over the scale's calibration. Good thing we weighed the cars earlier to test them! Don racks up victory #1 of the 2002 season for Bildon Motorsport, extending the NYSRRC lead significantly! Dave Zaslow appears and feeding Don's weekend ego proclaims "There's no catching Don this weekend!"

Back in the garage, the team's focus is now on the #55 car and it's apparent problem. Bill pulls the spark plugs out and notices they look like charcoal, black and sooty. New Bosch plugs are installed. The team decides to unhook the oxygen sensor, and change out the computer box on Bill's car. Digifarce! We're still working out the bugs. But when it works...it's fast!
Saturday night dinner at the Power House is excellent and the team dines with Dave Zaslow, Gene Giorgini, Andy King, and Mark H. All VW racers either currently or past, the group talks racing over a few Bishops Finger English Ales.

Sunday:

Sunday morning, Bill's car is finished up and he decides to run the morning warm up to check the changes. Don will sit it out, no sense chancing any problems. Bills car seems to be better and the team prepares for the race. Gridded directly behind Don will be Dave Zaslow always an excellent starter. Sure enough, when the green flag drops Dave goes by, but not for long. Don catches Dave and passes him at the end of the back straight. Don pulls out a commanding lead and finishes in first place! Bills car is running better, and he is catching Dave who is running out of gas near the end. Bill finishes a respectable 5th.
Post race, the cars are weighed again and everyone is discussing various on course events. The team has seen success! Don held a dominant position all weekend, and Bill's car's problems seem to have been cured. Bildon Motorsport now has a commanding lead in the NYSRRC 2002 season points total! The next stop is Watkins Glen. See you in July!

Welcome back to the winner's circle Don!
