Bildon Motorsport Victorious in “Laps To Conquer Multiple Sclerosis” Sports Car Race at Pocono International Raceway

2002 NYSRRC Series Champion Don Thompson returns where he left off, winning races.

Long Pond, PA, June 22, 2003 – Bildon Motorsport again returned to the winner’s circle with multiple class wins in the annual “Laps To Conquer Multiple Sclerosis” event held at Pocono International Raceway in Northeast Pennsylvania. Team driver and 2002 NYSRRC series champion Don Thompson won the Sunday sprint race along with the one-hour NESCCA endurance race in his Bildon Motorsport prepared Volkswagen GTI. The weekend involved multiple races including sprint races on Saturday and Sunday, along with a one-hour endurance race on Saturday afternoon for production based streetcars.

After qualifying third in class Don easily drove to a second place finish in class in the Saturday afternoon race held in rainy conditions. “The car felt great and I enjoy driving in the rain so after a few laps I began to pressure the Alfa Romeo ahead of me, eventually passing him but he had greater top speed on the straights,” said Thompson. “One lap from the end he made a mistake going on to the high banks allowing me to get side by side. On the last lap I drafted and tried to sling shot past at the checkered flag but was short by ½ a car length,” added Thompson.

Although again held under rainy conditions, Sunday proved even better for Don and the #50 Bildon Motorsport GTI. After a great start Don easily won the sprint race and then fought an overheating car to win the one-hour endurance race. “I didn’t really expect to even finish the enduro as the car was slowly losing coolant due a crack in a small fitting that we had no spares for,” says Thompson. “I was never happier to see the checkered flag as I don’t think I would have wanted to push the overheating car another two laps,” added Thompson.

The win catapulted Bildon Motorsport into first place in the North East Sports Car Club of America (NESCCA) Endurance Series points. In addition, with the second and first place sprint race results, Don is now 4th in the New York State Road Racing Championship (NYSRRC) points for 2003, passing team mate Bill Sulouff who is in 6th.

After a dominant season in 2002 resulting in a first place in the NYSRRC series the Bildon team has decided to campaign the longer endurance style races for 2003. “Growing up with a passion for European style sports car racing meant that the LeMans 24 hour race was the pinnacle of road racing,” says Don. “When the longer-format Northeast Endurance Series was announced we jumped at the chance to participate,” he added.
