NARRC / NYSRRC Races

First NYSRRC Event for Bildon ITB GTI #002

Saturday:

Saturday morning we awoke to find winter had returned to the Pocono Mountains. While it wasn't snowing, it was close. Track conditions were a horrific 37 miserable degrees, raining and windy. But hey this is VW FWD weather! Unfortunately it's also FWD Audi weather :(

We changed over to our rain tires and went out for qualifying. Don had not driven Pocono in years and this was a new track for Bill. Don's tires were old and shaved and as such were not really up to the task of running hard in the rain. He would qualify a respectable 5th regardless.
Bill was out on full wets and was able to qualify his GTI 3rd despite having no previous experience at this circuit. So far so good for Bildon Motorsport.

For the race, the rain had blown over but it was still very cold and cloudy. Two SSB BMW Z3s were having their own battle in amongst the pack of front running ITB cars. This let the leading Audi GT get away and created a difficult situation behind them as they were fast where the ITB cars were slower and vice versa.

About 5 laps into the race Don drafted by Bill on the Long Pond straight and tucked in behind a BMW Z3. The BMW slowed much faster than anticipated (ABS) causing him to take evasive maneuvers. Don turned right to avoid the Z3 but collected the rear bumper of one of the Blethen's Audi GTs that had just been outbraked by the Z3, and was turning into the corner. Bill was able to move past a few cars in the ensuing mayhem and moved into 2nd place. For Bill the rest of the race was spent dicing with the Audi which eventually was able to draft by and allow an Audi 1-2 finish with the Bildon GTI #55 placing 3rd.

Don had soldiered on for two more laps, watching the temperature guage slowly rise, and eventually pulled in the pits with a broken radiator. With these last few laps, Don was at least able to qualify as finishing the race, important for NYSRRC points. Don was rescued from his weekend low point in the garage when a fellow competitor informed him that Don had set the fastest time of the race!

Note: A special thanks goes out to Dave Zaslow and Joel High who went out of their way to help us get a replacement radiator so that Don could race on Sunday. Tim High had an unfortunate meeting with the Armco and destroyed his GTI. Fortunately his radiator was unscathed and we were able to borrow it. After canceling a few welcome dinner invitations, we decided to stay Saturday night, and get Joel's radiator installed in the #50 car.

Sunday:

For the Sunday warm-up session we played with the fuel injection mixture on both cars trying to maximize the top end power. Pocono has the longest WOT stretches of any track we'll run this year.

For the qualifying session car #55 noticed the car was "flat" on the top end. The hesitation from Saturday was turning into a "burble" A distinct weakness in the ignition. #55 was 2 seconds slower than #50, so it was obvious there was a problem. However, Don in the #50 car, put in a good qualifying session for 4th place on the grid.

The Race:
On the warm up lap #55 now had a hard miss. Total ignition cut out. Bill played with the throttle trying to figure out where it missed and whether he could even drive it or not. Over a complete lap it would eventually rev and have full power about 80% of the time...so it was drivable.

When the green flag flew Bill in #55 dropped back to the tail end of the lead pack so as not to be a rolling chicane. However after keeping up through the infield he found that on the straights past 4000rpm it seemed to clear up a bit. He would be in a race long battle for 5th. A great finish considering the engine misfire.

Meanwhile, at the front Don was in a tremendous race with Dave Zaslow and Michael Reese for 2nd place. Slightly ahead, the Audi GT of Stephen Blethen was slowly pulling away. Lap after lap the positions changed until finally Don was able to permanently establish himself in 2nd. The battle went through the last lap, when Dave Zaslow tried to draft and slighshot Don on the front straight, but Don's more aerodynamic Golf held on to 2nd. The lead Audi had pulled too far ahead for there to be any attack on the overall win.
