Nelson Ledges, August 18-19
KRS Races #7 & #8 NYSRRC Events

We're rolling now....

Saturday:

The event started on a down note as Bill put the car into the fence on the 3rd lap. Having become comfortable with the Nelson circuit he was not paying much attention to the fact that the rain showers from earlier inthe morning had left the carousel damp and muddy off line. Coming into the carousel on his first "hot lap" he drifted high and was "sucked" right to the tire wall in the wet grass.

Pulling into the pits to have a look revealed that only the bumper cover which had been damaged at Watkins Glen was broken. All else was fine and the remainder of qualifying was taken with a bit more care. After the morning qualifying session we wound up 3rd on the grid with a 1:21.8. 3rd is better than 2nd at Nelson as the first few corners are all right handers.

We were running our new "high torque" exhaust system this weekend. Yet another small change from the Atlanta setup that is helping us lower our times each event at Nelson Ledges. We're now able to get consistently into the 1:21's. There are still a few more things to change...stay tuned.

Don checks all the suspension bolts which have a bad habit of loosening on the rough Nelson circuit.

Visiting from Wolfsburg was Steffen Spies of RSG-Wolfsburg. It was great to share the weekend success with our friend and fellow VW enthusiast from "der fatherland".
Steffen has provided us with a great deal of VW motorsport information and was a key connection in getting us connected with the motorsports department in Hannover.

The race began with the weather bringing a mix of showers and sun. We tucked in behind the pole sitting Volvo to take second place through turn 2...however the #31 second place Golf was still on the outside and as we entered "Oak Tree" he dove inside to take second place back. Things settled down for a while and the three of us pulled away from the rest of the ITB pack. Towards the end of the race the #31 Golf started to push the issue with the leading Volvo. I noticed numerous attempts to pass and a couple which involved metal to metal contact. I smelled trouble as the skies opened again. Sure enough with 1 lap left the #31 tried an impossible pass through "the kink" which took both cars off and which handed Bildon it's second win of the series.

Victory!

Sunday:

The skies were dark as qualifying began, but the track was dry for the first race group. As everybody spilled out onto the track we drove straight to the pits and waited for 30 or 40 seconds. There is no need to race with other cars when qualifying. This gave us a completely empty track for our session which resulted in our first Pole Position of the year. Things were looking good.
2nd place!
