Surprise Wins for Bildon Motorsport!
Victories in the NYSRRC Sprint and NESCCA 2 Hr Endurance race.

The 2003 season is getting off to a late start this year. Primary drivers Don Thompson and Bill Sulouff have had business priorities which put racing in the back seat so far this year. However Bill would dust of old #55 for this weekend to shake the cobwebs out and see if anything needed attention.

Saturday we arrived at the track to get the car it's annual tech inspection. With the plan to use the event as a simple test day we decided to forego qualifying and just run Sunday's races... if the car was OK.

Hauling up to the track in the new 7.3 diesel Ford E350 was a pleasure. This new truck makes for a great tow vehicle amd also doubles as extra storage and "motorhome". If you don't have an enclosed trailer, the van is a great way to go.

Sunday morning we arrived at the track to find sunny skies and not the rain that had been predicted...and at Nelson that is truly a surprise! Therefore none of the time consuming infrastructure would need to be set up allowing this to become a very "low maintnence" weekend. Just what we were looking for.

When our race group was called we brought #55 up to the false grid "dead last" knowing that we had not qualified. It's fun when the pressure is off and you can just go out and play. Today's first race would be a 20 lap sprint. There were a few other ITB cars in this race along with a large # of ITA and ITS cars. The plan was to fall into a rhythm and listen and feel the car trying to determine what the car needed to get it ready for the rest of the year.
After passing a few slower ITA cars on the start we settled in and cruised around for 3-4 laps until we realized that the car was fine! The tires were n good shape, although a year old, the alignment seemed good and the motor was surprisingly good. Surprisingly becuase last year we had a pulley come off and it slammed the valves into the head. This was a lower compression, less "perfect" engine.

So with a bit of confidence and nothing to loose we began to push. Another few laps went by and we started to run down some of the front runners in ITB. The third place Volvo seemed to have problems and as we caught it and going into "Oak Tree" we got a "wave by" to go into 3rd place. Up ahead was the Rabbit GTI in 2nd place. At first it seemed as if we would not be able to catch the Rabbit however after trailing the second place car for an entire lap we could see where it's weakness was. Coming out of the Carousel, we pulled in tight behind the Rabbit and used a bit of drafting and the greater torque of the Golf engine to pull past going into the kink.

First place was a BMW 318 but it was nowhere to be seen. Today we were definately happy to settle for 2nd. After 20 laps we pulled into the pits to find out that the lead car had been black flagged for an exhaust system that was falling off! The race win was ours.

The last race of the day was a 2 hour endurnce race. It was the second event of the yuear for the new NESCCA Enduro Series and the first Endurance race for Bildon in a few years. We've run 24 hour races with this car in the past, so a 2 hour race is really a sprint, but hey...track time is track time, and the format is fun as driver changes and refueling add an extra element to the race. Today there would be no driver change however we would be stopping for a splash and dash late in the race.

The race started with #55 again bringin up the rear. A few slower cars were picked off quickly as in the sprint race. After a few laps we found ourselves sitting in 4th place behind a short train of spec Miatas snaking through the curves nose to tail. Knowing they were out of our class and seemingly having our class handly under control we settled in to watch the fun ahead.
However this only lasted for a few laps as the GTI was feeling racy today and the Miatas were slowing each other down with there own battle. So after a few more laps the Bildon GTI picked off all the Miatas and found itself in the lead of the 2 hour race. After about 1/2 hour one of the Miatas went off in turn 1 bringing out a full course yellow. The pace car picked up the leading Bildon GTI and brought the field around to regroup. Once the track was clear the pace car dove off and Bill, driving the Bildon GTI, decided to "break the will" of anyone thinking about using this oppotunity to mount a charge...He pushed hard for 3 laps pulling out a lead that left nobody wondering who was the car to beat.

At the 1 hour mark, most of the teams pulled into the pits for the mandatory pit stop. The Bildon GTI stayed out and settled in to a pace that was quick but very easy to maintain without unnecessary drama. Every 5 laps or so we would push hard for a few laps to make sure that the lead was still ours.
With about 40 minutes to go the #55 GTI pitted for a dash of fuel and then rejoined the race eventually taking the checkered flag for it's second victory of the day. A surprising weekend's results for Bildon Motorsport!
