Watkins Glen International, 7/27-28/2002
MARRS / NYSRRC Race

Bildon Motorsport started 2002 with the goal of winning the New York State Road Racing Championship (NYSRRC) and here we were at the halfway point in the season with that goal well in hand. Don Thompson had returned from a long hiatus to start off right were he left the sport many years ago...winning. Prior to this weekend Don had a commanding lead over the next competitor and team mate Bill in the 2nd Bildon GTI. So now it was time to head back to the track that started it all for Bildon Motorsport... Watkins Glen.

Saturday:

After a successful day of testing Friday, we set out with high confidence for the weekend's race at WGI. With only 1 tire vendor at the track we were unable to get our new shoes mounted up for practice. This wasn't any real concern given the times that were done on the old tires during Friday's test. In the quickly warming air of the first practice session a conservative time of 1:28 was turned just to do a final test of some new components. In the afternoon qualifying session Bill was able to use the speed he had found during the test day to put the #55 GTI on the front row next to MARRS championship leader Paulo doCouto.(right) Unfortunately for Don, the lack of tire service meant he would have to qualify on old tires. This left the #50 GTI at a disadvantage and Don would qualify a disappointing 8th as a result.

Because Watkins Glen is the home track for the team it's always a time when friends and family who don't normally follow racing stop by. We were pleasantly surprised when Dick Murray and family stopped by. Dick was instrumental in introducing us to the World of Sports car racing many years ago.

Sunday:

Race day brought the threat of rain. With new wet tires and front wheel drive we were hoping the clouds might open for our race. However as we were the final race of the day the front had finally passed through and it dried off.

Before the start, Paulo and Bill discussed how they were both running for separate championships and that they would work together to try and sprint away from the rest of the field at the start. When the green flag flew that is exactly how it panned out. Bill got a good start and went down the outside of Paulo into turn one and then tucked in behind to draft up the long WGI back straight. Down the backstraight Bill gave Paulo a good shot on the rear bumper sending him 3-4 car lengths ahead in an attempt to move the pair away from the pursuing BMWs and Volvos.

TEAM
On the second lap Bill made a deliberate effort to come out of turn 1 with the best exit speed he could manage...as a result he was able to pull up into the draft of the lead GTI and slingshot by halfway down the straight. Bill would lead the next lap and then point Paulo by coming out of turn 1, again in an attempt to work together to secure a top finish instead of fighting and giving those behind the opportunity to catch up.

For the next few laps Bill tucked in behind the leading Golf GTI and was patient to stay there as they had successfully pulled out a significant lead over the rest of the field. Unfortunately the fight for the win never materialized as Bill's GTI was slowly losing low-end power. Not much, but just enough to let Paulo pull a few yards out each lap. As it turned out Bill would lose his exhaust, which had broken. It finally fell off a few laps from the end of the race. In retrospect this was why probably why the car was losing low-end torque.

Meanwhile back in the field Don was having a good run with a number of Volvos and BMWs, historically the cars to have at WGI. For most of the race, Don was in a battle with an Alfa Romeo, which was only faster on the 2 longest straights at WGI. Lap after lap the #50 car would lead into the "boot" section of WGI and remain ahead until the straight where the pesky 2-liter twin-cam Alfa would catch up. Mid-race, the notorious "bog" would rear it's ugly head as Don was attempting to pass the Alfa going into the down hill turn after the chute loop. This part of the track receives runoff from nearby springs after rainfall. The Bildon GTI hit this wet patch and as the front end washed out the Alfa bumper was slightly tapped. The Alfa fishtailed, but excellent driving by the experienced Patrick Pegues caught the car and held the lead. On the following lap Don was able to plan an earlier pass to avoid the bog! The car was working well into and through the bus stop turn so Don went inside the Alfa into the chute loop. He held the lead for the rest of the race.

At the front Bill had backed off and accepted the 2nd place finish while Don pulled off a hard fought 6th place. Both team members would bring home trophies and medals from the event. Most importantly, Bildon Motorsport had stretched it's lead in the NYSRRC championship. The next event is in 2 weeks at LimeRock Park in Connecticut.
