Thompson's GTI extends NYSRRC points lead!

Watkins Glen International , 7/23-24/2005

It's always with tremendous excitement that the team returns to the fabled Watkins Glen road racing circuit in upstate New York. "The Glen" is the team's home track and is intensely challenging with over 3.4 miles of elevation changes off camber turns and fast long straights. Don has a new set of race tires for this weekend which should help tremendously with the goal of setting ever-faster lap times.

In Saturdays qualifying session Don qualifies 3rd on the fast Glen circuit where the faster 2 liter cars (Volvo's and BMW's) often have the advantage. The Bildon GTI will start behind a Volvo and a BMW and just in front of a fast, red, NY region VW Golf. When Sunday arrives the Bildon car makes its way to the grid and is shocked to find out that the grid marshals do not show Don as qualifying!

Don sits off to the side while teammate Bill Sulouff makes a mad scooter dash to the timing and scoring tower to find officials. After a few minutes the situation is rectified as a mistake is found. Don takes his rightful place tucked in between the fast GTI and the BWW 2002 just ahead.

On the start the fast GTI immediately rockets to the lead in ITB and the race settles in. Don catches the BMW and makes a clean pass into turn 1 and sets his eyes on the yellow Volvo just ahead. Don's car is quicker in the corners, and he passes the Volvo only to be re-passed on the fastest straight. Near mid point in the race, an ITC-class Honda spins down in the twisty 'boot' area and lodges himself in the tire wall at the apex of the turn. Suddenly a full course yellow flag comes out and the pack bunches up. On the restart, Don makes good use of his crew chief on the radios and darts inside the Volvo when the green flag appears. Again the Volvo edges past on the back straight. Following close, Don makes a pass on the Volvo onto the front straight only to see a local yellow flag going into turn one and he has to back off.

For the rest of the race Don and the Volvo would closely race until the race finishes under another yellow flag. In the post-race impound the fast, red Golf from NYC is found to be under weight and is disqualified. Don has finished second and nearly won the race. Even better yet, when the final times are analyzed, the team learns that Don has turned his fastest time ever at the Glen a 2:24.9!
