Nelson Ledges, June 10-11
NYSRRC Races #3 & #4  KRS Races #1 & #2

Finally we're racing again....

Saturday:

Due to the wedding of a good friend, the Saturday race was skipped.

Sunday:

Arrived at the track late expecting to have plenty of time to prepare since we were thre last race group of the day. We were greated with a nice surprise however. ITS had been moved to Group #3! So... no time to get the car through tech inspection and change tires, suit up and still make qualifying...drat!

So instead we were given the opportunity to go out with our original race group #6 and practice.
Nelson Ledges road course is one of the oldest club racing circuits in America. IT's seen hard times lately and the surface is not always...well it's bumpy. Lately a nearly complete repaving have greatly improved the surface however there are still areas you need to be careful with. Careful becuase the runoff areas are often wet, and always close to the tree or tirewalls.

Bill was taking it easy on during this session making sure not to bounce off the track in Turn 1 or the Carousel. The stiff springs that had transformed the car from a nose heavy beast into a very well behaved corner carver were now showintg their weakness. On even the small bumps that Nelson still has meant car was prone to 'jump' a few feet sideways under heavy g-loading.

The car felt as expected, twitchy due to the stiff springs and poor alignment. The only new development was that the synchros in the gearbox were starting to act up, affecting the speed of gear the changes. (Time for the proper gear oil) All in all, the only real issue seemed to be the old tires in the rear giving up and that would be changed before the race.

A best lap of 1:17.9 was recorded. This is almost full 2 seconds off the best ITS times for this track, but quicker than most of the ITS competitors who were at this event!

These practice times would not count toward our starting position for the race. We would have to start dead last.

Fastest Lap 1:17.9
Qualified: DNQ

Race:

There were no unrealistic expectations heading into the race. We were dead last and the ITS cars we were competing against were on the other end of a 20 car train at the front. So we turned on the data acquisition logger and were treating this as an extended test session. Th ebiggest concern was keepin gout of trouble. Some of the backmarkers sometimes dont have mirrors ;-)

Hanging way back on the pace lap to avoid any first lap drama we were able to run the car hard into the corners and hard on the brakes... instead of following the herd slowly around. When the green flag dropped we followed the train through until the back stright and then began picking off cars in bunches. Carefull to put our car in plain site of thoise slower classes racing so that they knew we were coming through. Headlights ablaze, the Bildon Corrado passed about 12 cars in the first 2 laps. Hey this is kinda fun!

After the first few laps it was time to settle into a pace as the ITS cars are long gone. From laps 4 ~ 12 Still picking off 1-2 cars per lap mainly on the straights... now well into the ITA field... and lapping some of the slower cars twice, a few times it was possible to get a clean lap. So the pace was picke dup a bit. Trying to do consistent fast laps without risking it in the hard corners. This was an extended test.

Touch a curb and car comes down a little hard.. Bill now hears a scrape and then loud exhaust noise.... Is the car going to be black flagged for an exhaust falling off? ...that never happened...so after a lap or two more it was time to get back to business. With a noisy can that may now be down on torque a bit due to the lack of exhuast Bill wsa content to ride it out and take it home in one peice...but up ahead he sees....yes, Datsuns and Mazdas! So on the final 3 laps Bill pushed a little harder to see if he could break into the ITS points...but just as he pulled up behind the last ITS car in the pack the checker flew. In those final laps however, the Bildon Motorsport Corrado recorded the fastest lap of the race and proved that this car can be competitive in ITS.

Fastest Lap 1:18.2
