Shipping an engine to Bildon Motorsport is easier than you might think.
1. Aquire a pallet:
Get a pallet from any business that does a lot of receiving. They are often laying around the dumpster. Ask if it's not obvious that they are being thrown out. Most will be happy to unload them on you. If you buy one, don't pay more than $10. They can be purchased from companies like ULine. http://www.uline.com
A full pallet is not needed. The smaller "Euro" pallets 32"x24" should suffice for most VW engines and gearboxes. Cutting the pallet down to a smaller size is fine as long as your shipping company can get a lift under it.
2. Thoroughly clean your engine/gearbox:
Please drain all fluids and reinstall all drain plugs. Clean excess oil and grease from the exterior. Additional charges will be incurred for engines or gearbox received which are leaking or covered in oil or grease.
Note: We highly recommend hat you put your engine/gearbox inside a large plastic bag or 50 gallon drum liner prior to strapping it down.
3. Strap the engine to the pallet:
Ideally you will want to have the engine strapped to the pallet with nylon or preferably steel strapping. Many shipping services can do this for you.
However another option which works well is to purchase some motorcycle "tie-downs" which are readily available at Harbor Freight, Home Depot or Lowes. These can often be had for as little as $4 each. We will return your straps when we ship it back to you.
3+. Further secure engine on the pallet:
You should screw some 2x4's to the pallet around the block so it is less likely to move under the straps. If it moves, the straps may come loose and your engine may be damaged. Remember shipping companies are notoriously NOT careful... you have been warned!
4. Optional Packaging:
Optional for engines, but strongly recommended for gearboxes is to use a heavy duty corregated
box. Your box can be strapped to the pallet for the best, most secure shipping solution. Run the straps THROUGH the box to the gearbox or engine. Do not crush the box with straps or it will work its way loose in shipping!
Do not fill the box with any packing materials as it will only compress against the weight of the engine or gearbox and make cleanup more time consuming. You can however include engine accessories if you pack them in their own boxes with appropriate padding. Do not toss loose items like intakes, ECUs and cylinder heads into the box without proper packaging!
5. Contact us about shipment.
Contact us before the engine is ready to ship. We may refuse engines that arrive unannounced! We can work with you to determine the best way to get your engine to a shipping depot or if possible have the shippers come directly to you. For example, if your engine is in a residential neighborhood, or you can't spend all day waiting on a truck, you may want to get the pallet on a pickup truck and take it to the local trucking terminal where a forklift can easily transfer it to the semi-trailer truck. You might save a few bucks off of the shipping charges too.
The customer is responsible for arranging shipment to us. Any insurance or import duties must be paid by the shipper. We retain the right to refuse any shipments not adhering to these rules.
Note: It's acceptble to remove the cylinder head, gearbox, manifolds, etc. from the engine. Cylinderheads can be sent regular UPS, FedEx etc. Just make sure we get ALL the longblock parts. It's just as important to not send us anything extra either as we may assume you don't want it anymore and may throw it away. (like lifetime platinum spark plugs, oil coolers, distributors, etc.)
